Johnny Cash

Hurt

When does a cover stop feeling like a cover?

Cash did not need to turn the composition inside out. The striking change is who is singing it — and what the same song begins to mean when it arrives through a completely different life.

The Original

The Story

Same song.
Different life.

Trent Reznor later described hearing Cash inhabit such a personal song as strange and initially uncomfortable. The music video changed his reaction: the reinterpretation suddenly made sense as its own piece of art.

The Mark Romanek-directed video pushes the shift even further by placing the older Cash against images from his past. It won the 2004 Grammy for Best Music Video.

What Robin Notices

The biggest change isn't the song.
It's the person inside it.

A new version does not always need more ideas. Sometimes restraint, context and the right voice do more than a complete rewrite.

Robin's Take

You don't always need to rewrite the idea.

Sometimes you need to change who is telling it.
